On the afternoon of June 2, with the erection of an online futuristic “Marseum” (a museum for Martians), the 8th Annual Design Exhibition of Tianjin University (TJU) opened. During the exhibition, more than 130 pieces of works by students are exhibited online.

This year marks the eighth year of the exhibition. Under the guidance of “Beauty and Technology”, this exhibition is co-organized by Publicity Department, the Office of Academic Affairs, Youth League Committee and the Library, and for the first time co-sponsored by different majors from four schools and colleges including the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Architecture, the College of Intelligence and Computing, and Xuanhuai School, fully demonstrating the integration of aesthetic education, science and innovation on campus. In late June, a sub-exhibition will be held in the Historic Town Of Dangkou in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, to further promote cooperation among enterprises, universities, and research institutes and commercialization of TJU’s design works .

Design and Translation of Traditional Design Culture and Views of Nature and Space——Course Exercises of Junior Students Majoring in Environmental Art Design

The theme of this year’s exhibition “Marseum” bears unique significance. When people on earth view an object, they will analyze and appreciate it based on their experience gained from daily life. However, if Martians come to Earth, they will feel confounded by all technological, aesthetic and cultural existence. Therefore, the annual exhibition challenges the participating students with “the unique feeling of Martians on Earth’s objects”, encouraging them to “re-understand design from an unknown perspective”.

During the exhibition, students majoring in Industrial Design have conducted an in-depth study of the unique theme of “Marseum”, linking the intuitive experience of the earth's diverse landscapes with the human characteristics shown in the exhibits and categorizing their works into six novel parts, namely Shamo, Yulin, Fengshi, Haiyang, Bingchuan, and Huoshan. Their exhibits cover medical rehabilitation, parent-child education, home life, cultural creativity, pension/public facilities and other fields.

As said by organizers, all these innovative works reflect students’ concern and thinking about vulnerable groups and social public issues, as well as their attention on the protection and inheritance of traditional Chinese culture: “We hope that through this activity, teachers and students can develop their ability to discover and appreciate beauty, help everyone find the necessary connection between engineering and aesthetics, and cultivate people with the charm of science and technology and the enjoyment of beauty.”
